USA’s First Astronaut To Get Medical In Space

So, 60 years ago, started a story in Electronics Weekly’s edition of January 18 1961

The story continues:

Project Mercury is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s manned orbital flight programme. The spaceman’s pulse, temperature, respiration, physical reactions and oxygen consumption will be transmitted electronically to ground stations.

Equipment for this purpose has been developed by the Bendix Corporation.

Approximately 90 different measurements will be needed to furnish scientists with data affecting the astronaut and capsule on their flight.

As each ground station receives the information, operators will collect and transmit the information to a central computing installlation.

Physical conditions of the astronaut will be displayed and recorded for both immediate and later observations.
