In 2012, the government put up $900 million to encourage companies to instal EV charging stations.
With EVs currently representing about 1% of cars in Japan, the country now has a huge number of unused, ageing charging stations.
The lifetime of a charging station is eight years
Some have already been scrapped. Last year the country had 30,300 charging stations, this year, it has 29,200.
Despite jumping the gun, Japan plans to have 130,000 charging stations by 2030.
